Martin Joiner BA Biography
A brief history
I have put my mind to many unique projects over the years which have meant I've grown competent in an eclectic mix of skills. I do not draw boundaries between mediums; for me, realising an idea is an everyday process and all that changes day-to-day is what tools are in my hands. It is completely normal for me to write a batch of computer code, apply a flawless layer of paint and calculate the angles of a 3D object all in the same day. I have a knack for self-teaching and thrive on a delicate balance of art and science.

My professional ethos
With a healthy balance of real-world experience and academic education I spread my energies between client projects, my own artwork and sub-contracted projects gained from larger companies outsourcing work. I operate on a humble low overheads principle allowing competitive prices, flexible schedules and constant self development to remain relevant in all the industries which my practice spans. With an extensive network of skilled associates I can also call upon outside skills when necessary.
I operate on 3 main principles with one key test...
- Ethical
- I do not sell clients products they don't need, I use eco-friendly options where available, I run a tight schedule and price my time honestly. I am in this for the long term.
- Direct
- I do not have a salesman or a PA. The service that I offer clients is so expansive and genuinely creative that if I were to try and derive ideas while communicating through a third person it would never work. All the complexities of the design process combined with the many facets of a client's business creates a wide enough variation as it is without introducing a layer of chinese wispers.
- Creative
- The question of what creativity is, was a core aspect of my Fine Art degree. I have a strong ethos on when something is creative and how to build an environment in which creativity can occur.
The test: I would be happy to bump into any one of my clients in my free time and have a drink with them. The ability to see a proffesional associate in a social environment and not feel discomfort, embarrasment or awkwardness is a fine test of whether you have delivered a fair service. As a self-employed person, the line between work and life is particularly fragile and it's important I keep the relationship sweet. I love what I do.
