I'm gutted I missed this. Unfortunately, I was working. When I read your facebook post, I thought it was a brilliant idea (also really like the Ben Folds video you posted). Innovative, as I have come to expect.

I don't think you should change the format of the night. Unfortunately it's pure business that you've got to attract the "non-musos" as well as the dedicated fan. It would be very hard for any venue to survive, especially in Taunton, on specific genre fans. There just are not enough of them.

Open Mic should be a mixed bag, it helps keep the audience engaged. A good performer should be able to adapt to an audience. If they choose not to, then they do so at their own risk and should be prepared to take the consequences. It may be down to pride- I came here to play this and you're going to listen. I've played sets with that mindset and it quickly goes sour. It was much more enjoyable for me when I was flexible to the crowd and they got involved and showed their enjoyment.

Quite a rambling comment, maybe I'm tired. I guess the point I'm trying to make is don't change it for just a few people. If they can't operate within an unpredictable environment, maybe they shouldn't be there in the first place.

I think Mikey is Naieve. The idea that Africans take drugs specifically and with a purpose is laughable. Of course they dont! To me the question becomes why is drug use so prolific? Why do people feel the need to not be in their own heads? To me it is clear that unhappiness is the greatest catalyst.

After taking the drug at a 3 day binge I can see why it's so popular in the uk, yes its quite like ecstasy but seems cleaner, No come down - although I found it made me quite moody after stopping. Drugs wherever legal or illegal have implications I just feel there needs to be more information on how to take drugs more sensibly because people will still take them no matter what.
What needs to be researched is the long term effects of mephadrone for people that constantly keep taking it every weekend.

Comment on I’m not a DJ I’m a Selector by Philip Blake

I was having a think about this the other day Martin... Mainly after seeing an advert on TV for some twat of a violin player, being classed as the 'best new and upcoming artist' and what was he playing? Other peoples music. Not just that, WELL KNOWN music that had been around for YEARS and that's played by EVERY SINGLE BLOODY VIOLINIST IN THE WORLD. Sorry... i got a bit angry :P

My point being that DJs are not the only 'selectors' who get a kick out of playing other peoples music. Almost every band, every classical and commercial music will all do it for the majority of their career. Now what i don't get though is why I'm going to a college where a few hundred kids are paying £3200 a year, to learn how to play other peoples music. Yes... They may learn how to play it better, but that's pretty much it!

So it's not really just DJs, the thing with DJs is that they do it to break into the mainstream and then us that skill to introduce their own tunes, its how any good DJ/producer gets known. They work hard, mix and produce day in day out and try and get somewhere.

I have a friend on my course who's done just that. He's been a DJ for ages, slowly worked his way up the ladder to get headline spots of next to Pendulum and the like, and he's now been picked up by well known dubstep producer N-Type.

Classical musicians well... Where do you see/hear them? On classical FM? playing what? OTHER PEOPLES MUSIC.

It's a rare occasion that you may get any classical playing writing their own music and performing it.
