a banging club night with Art. \u00a0Whichever stance you prefer to take it was a good night at the Perfect 5th, Taunton. \u00a0The \u00a33 door tax went towards raising money for the Somerset College Fine Art degree show which will be held in June at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.somerset.ac.uk\/\">the college<\/a> and local art gallery <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thebrewhouse.net\/\">The Brewhouse<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>I exhibited my latest sculpture alongside a wide variety of work by Richard Balman,\u00a0Felix Stochaj,\u00a0Jena Bartley,\u00a0Gina Ford,\u00a0Ashley Thomas,\u00a0Steve O'Shea,\u00a0Terry Sommerville,\u00a0Will Day,\u00a0Luke Parkman, and\u00a0Ellen Goldsmith who are all current students or alumni of the college. \u00a0The event was\u00a0conjured\u00a0up by Felix Stochaj and I was proud to work with him in making it happen.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-237 aligncenter\" title=\"DJ Funky P\" src=\"http:\/\/martinjoiner.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/P3207244-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"DJ Funky P\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/martinjoiner.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/P3207244-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/martinjoiner.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/P3207244.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The DJs were a great variety organised into a progressive build up. \u00a0Starting the night was Funky P (pictured above) who played old school funk and hip hop for the first hour and a bit. \u00a0Then we had event creator Felix playing a set followed by\u00a0<span style=\"color: #333333;\">Selector Dawid, SparkS &amp; JoshNRG, and T on the Table &amp; MightyD. \u00a0Now I don't know much about the music other than what I do and do not like so I shall leave the writing about that to <a href=\"http:\/\/hyperfrank.blogspot.com\/\">Hyperfrank<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>So that's the objective view out the way, let me get personal. \u00a0It was a bit\u00a0disappointing\u00a0to see none of the course tutors at the event. \u00a0Considering it was raising hard cash for the most important date in an art degree course's calender you would think they'd make an effort. \u00a0This is exactly the kind of thing that fine art should be doing more of. \u00a0Shows that are really accessible to the public held alongside things that are culturally popular. \u00a0We are in the age of the DJ (musically speaking) and alcohol is as popular as ever so if art wants to reach the people, it's a logical conclusion to hold shows in bars.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-230 aligncenter\" title=\"My sculpture\" src=\"http:\/\/martinjoiner.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/P3207254-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"My sculpture\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/martinjoiner.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/P3207254-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/martinjoiner.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/P3207254.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Now, lets zoom in on my one piece of art that I was exhibiting. \u00a0The public reaction was exactly as I expected. \u00a0I revel in making pieces of work that are easily misinterpreted. \u00a0I don't know why but I just love pitching my stance in a way that is close to the borderline between each side of a debate. \u00a0Strangely though my view is never\u00a0interpreted\u00a0as sitting on the fence but rather one side or the other, as if the viewers could never conceive an artist to be an impartial host for a debate but rather they <em>must<\/em> be a one sided extremist. \u00a0Maybe I love that satisfying moment when I realise that the person ranting at me about how wrong I am is actually in agreement with me and I then drop a simple one line\u00a0explanation\u00a0that makes them realise so.<\/p>\n<p>Strangely enough I actually received criticism from one \"fan\" for being the <em>only<\/em> artist to have included a formal write up of my work. \u00a0But I make no apologies for that. \u00a0As an art fan I have observed plenty of exhibits that have not made sense until I read the write up. \u00a0I find <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tracey_Emin\">Tracey Emin<\/a> consistently produces pieces of work that do not appeal to me until I read about them and then they become pieces I really like.
