{"id":275,"date":"2010-03-26T10:36:28","date_gmt":"2010-03-26T10:36:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/martinjoiner.co.uk\/blog\/?p=275"},"modified":"2010-03-26T10:40:36","modified_gmt":"2010-03-26T10:40:36","slug":"is-making-art-for-kudos-or-cash-cheating","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/martinjoiner.co.uk\/blog\/2010\/03\/26\/is-making-art-for-kudos-or-cash-cheating\/","title":{"rendered":"Is making art for kudos or cash cheating?"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"_mcePaste\" style=\"position: absolute; left: -10000px; top: 0px; width: 1px; height: 1px; overflow-x: hidden; overflow-y: hidden;\">All purposes of art are equally valid and I don't call anyone a cheat regardless of whether they are doing it for cash, propaganda, popularity, self-counselling, preaching of a message, anthropology or a mixture of several. \u00a0I may choose to disassociate myself with them but I don't tell them what they're doing is wrong. \u00a0It's just not for me.<\/div>\n<div id=\"_mcePaste\" style=\"position: absolute; left: -10000px; top: 0px; width: 1px; height: 1px; overflow-x: hidden; overflow-y: hidden;\">But one thing that is almost impossible to get away from is that art and money are intrinsically linked because brushes, paint and canvas do not get given away in shops for free. \u00a0Nor do cameras, food, paper, computers, books or any of the numerous necessary items. \u00a0At some point along the line materials get paid for and therefore the piece of art will have been funded by some source. \u00a0And exhibitions are even more expensive with lighting, heating, maintenance, staffing and everything else to take into consideration. \u00a0Marketing is another cost, to publish a website, print a flyer or even use Facebook you are paying with cash or by viewing advertisements.<\/div>\n<div id=\"_mcePaste\" style=\"position: absolute; left: -10000px; top: 0px; width: 1px; height: 1px; overflow-x: hidden; overflow-y: hidden;\">I'm not sure where this idea of art being pure comes from. \u00a0Maybe it's a hangover from the Catholic propaganda that claimed to be straight from God but was of course produced by a Church that owned nearly all the country's gold and therefore controlled most of the nation's wealth.<\/div>\n<div id=\"_mcePaste\" style=\"position: absolute; left: -10000px; top: 0px; width: 1px; height: 1px; overflow-x: hidden; overflow-y: hidden;\">Every artist has costs.
