{"id":9,"date":"2009-06-08T11:57:24","date_gmt":"2009-06-08T11:57:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/martinjoiner.co.uk\/blog\/?p=9"},"modified":"2015-07-11T10:08:25","modified_gmt":"2015-07-11T10:08:25","slug":"linux-experiment-has-ended-so-soon","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/martinjoiner.co.uk\/blog\/2009\/06\/08\/linux-experiment-has-ended-so-soon\/","title":{"rendered":"Linux experiment has ended so soon"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>After just a few days of attempting to use only Linux (Ubuntu 9.04) I have already returned to Windows XP.\u00a0 Here follows the list of restrictions that I experienced in order of when they came to light...<\/p>\n<p><strong>Negatives<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>No 'Save for Web' option in Gimp<\/li>\n<li>gFTP does not support folders with spaces in the name<\/li>\n<li>FileZilla does not support 32 bit Linux systems<\/li>\n<li>Video editing programmes are ALL sub standard (worst than the early version of iMovie circa 2002)<\/li>\n<li>My DVD drive will read CD-ROMS but not DVD-ROM (no solution available on the web)<\/li>\n<li>Quanta code colouring not good and environment not as visually pleasant as Dreamweaver (it really does become a headache after just an hour of usage)<\/li>\n<li>No multiple file transfer feature in gFTP<\/li>\n<li>No 'Site Manager' feature in gFTP<\/li>\n<li>No separate adjustment layers in GIMP (only direct irreversible application to a layer)<\/li>\n<li>Flash\/Vector animation is non existent<\/li>\n<li>Local host php development is made hard by Linux system security.\u00a0 (to develop on a live server you must be constantly logged in as root user, unlike windows where you just work on the files like any other document)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Notice I have not taken into account restrictions felt due to the inherent difficulties of changing environments.\u00a0 I do not feel it would be fair to judge a system on what is a basic human inevitability that one will take a while to adjust to a foreign environment.<\/p>\n<p>There are many advantages to Linux Ubuntu system but here are the ones that specifically pleased me.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Positives<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>File navigation is excellent to use, better than windows.\u00a0 Browse through a folder with many sub-folders, enter a folder and then click back and the window remembers what point you were scrolled to.\u00a0 Incredibly helpful for going through a well organised MP3 collection building a play list.<\/li>\n<li>Media playing is effortless<\/li>\n<li>Network set up is effortless and automatic<\/li>\n<li>Application adding\/removing is brilliant<\/li>\n<li>System monitoring is very good<\/li>\n<li>Multiple desktops is very useful<\/li>\n<li>Spell checking web browser is a fantastic feature<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Having learned all these positives and negatives I am not abandoning Linux completely, I will simply run a duel boot machine.\u00a0 I will alert the Linux developers of my experience so they can choose to fix or leave.\u00a0 I will also seek out plugins for Firefox and other applications to try and mimick the convenient features that I experienced in Ubuntu 9.04.\u00a0 And yes people!\u00a0 There is a spell check feature in Firefox in Windows XP you just have to install the <a title=\"Firefox Spell Check Windows XP\" href=\"https:\/\/addons.mozilla.org\/en-US\/firefox\/addon\/3366\" target=\"_blank\">Firefox British Spell Check Dictionary<\/a>?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>After just a few days of attempting to use only Linux (Ubuntu 9.04) I have already returned to Windows XP.\u00a0 Here follows the list of restrictions that I experienced in order of when they came to light&#8230;
