MacKay Design Studio Creative Architectural Lighting
I don't often blog my work as a website designer but every now and then I do a piece of work I am particularly proud of. I consider myself a craftsman of website design as opposed to a door-to-door salesman which, quite frankly, the industry is over-saturated with. Working to produce individual systems means I earn less than the big companies who concentrate on retailing generic out-the-box sites with just a change of colour scheme and a banner design to distinguish the difference. But I gain a lot more satisfaction from my work. Sadly, I had expected to have gathered a warm little niche of designer friends by the time I progressed to the 4th year as a professionally website designer, but instead I am left dumb-founded by continuously meeting so-called website designers who cannot write HTML code, have never heard of a hypertext preprocessor or cannot explain what MySQL is or why someone might use it. It leaves one feeling rather lonely.
But away from my inner neuroses and back to the point of this blog. Last week I returned to working with my very first website client, Neil Musson who needed his site updating. An architectural lighting designer, Neil is basically an artist who works with arranging lighting for living spaces. Through his company, MacKay Design Studio, he offers services to clients who want a unique visual edge adding to their environment. As a client Neil has a very specific vision, and naturally so. With many years of experience in the creative industries and an educational background from the Royal College he is bound to know what he wants. He was my first client back in 2007 and I was quite green. Still, I charged a very modest price and delivered my humble skills, learning what I needed along the way. These days I have learnt so much more and what stands online for Neil's site today is a tight interweaving of a client's graphical vision, my cross-browser compatible coding style, animation skills, javascript, knowledge of search engine optimisation and bespoke back-end admin section for use by the client. All efficiently hand-coded in HTML, tested in the 7 most popular browsers and delivered in just one day, charged at a competitive price.
